about

Well, this is it. Somehow this little tune ended up being the longest of all of them, and I'm not sure how that happened. I don't have much to say about this that isn't in the song, other than I've never had a song's subject be such a moving target before. When I started it was about one thing. Then as I worked on it, events changed. Then they REALLY changed, and bowled me over in a way that I could never have predicted.

All in all, the last week of 2009 may have been the most eventful of what was already an unbelievably eventful year. And I'm still picking up the pieces, and trying to understand what they mean.

lyrics

Here he comes, it's the insurance man
He's heading for the final go-round on the track
He's been sitting idle for a real long time
And he can keep it up forever, if he has to

I've been saying I'll be fine
(I know you're listening)
That I could live without you, I was wrong
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening)
It's so much easier to live a lie
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening now)
It's OK, I'll keep this locked up tight
I'll never tell you what I know

Here he is, he needs assurance, man
Someday he'll figure out it just ain't there
This could be the best or worst idea you've ever had
But it can't be either one until you own it

I've been talking all this time
(I know you're listening)
I've been singing about you all year long
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening)
Had to look you in the eye
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening now)
The jig's up, there's no more room for dodging
It's time to tell you what I know

You can go now, boy - you're free
You've served your penance full, yeah
It's time to let yourself believe
All of your accounts are zeroed out
You can choose to leave that weight behind
You can choose to dance and sing
You can choose to live and love
All of your accounts are zeroed out

It got all turned around somehow
(I know you're listening)
And now I'm laying beside you all night long
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening)
I'm drowning slowly in your eyes
(I know you're listening, I know you're listening now)
That did it, we've crossed our Rubicon
There's no more hiding what I know
