This song was called "Elephantine" long before it had any words. Once I finally wrote lyrics for it, I just couldn't bring myself to change the title. I never made any attempt to use the word in the song. Still, this song is called "Elephantine", and that's that.
It's really weird to be a single guy at nearly 40 years old. I've noticed a lot of the "5240" songs have been about this subject. I hope it doesn't get too boring for you, the listener.
lyrics
Put your foot in it
Them teeth are sharp
Gonna lose the leg -
There's a lot can be done to smooth the scars
Don't wanna argue
I know you're right
Next box o' Cracker Jack
Make sure you get the prize
So long, fare well, it's time to say good night
Here's your big moment
How are you gonna play it?
You tell her what she's gotta hear
Not what you wanna say
You're alive to fight another day
That's all you can hope for
It's all she can give
You can cling to this on the lonely nights
Another reason to live
You're alive to fight another day
Pulled me out of it
You harshed my buzz
I need a substitute
Who looks just like she does
Yeah, we're all liars
We have to be
Beware the hopeful -
They can't handle honesty
So long, fare well, it's time to say good night
There goes your big moment
Guess you left it back there
You told her what she had to hear
You wanna cry about what's fair?
You're alive to fight another day
