Elephantine 03:42
Put your foot in it Them teeth are sharp Gonna lose the leg - There's a lot can be done to smooth the scars Don't wanna argue I know you're right Next box o' Cracker Jack Make sure you get the prize So long, fare well, it's time to say good night Here's your big moment How are you gonna play it? You tell her what she's gotta hear Not what you wanna say You're alive to fight another day That's all you can hope for It's all she can give You can cling to this on the lonely nights Another reason to live You're alive to fight another day Pulled me out of it You harshed my buzz I need a substitute Who looks just like she does Yeah, we're all liars We have to be Beware the hopeful - They can't handle honesty So long, fare well, it's time to say good night There goes your big moment Guess you left it back there You told her what she had to hear You wanna cry about what's fair? You're alive to fight another day

Sad 01:07
There's a lot of good things About our situation But for now I'm sad Now I'm just sad I'm pretty proud of myself For noticing the high points But right now I'm sad Now I'm just sad 'Cause for all the lessons learned And the ways that I'll improve It still boils down to this It still boils down to: I can't have you I can't love you I can't have you I'm sure there will be a day When I can look back and laugh But right now I'm sad

I forget nothing I know just what you said A house of horrors Where dreamers go to die A bit of magic What exactly does this prove? Your guess is good as My opinion ballyhooed So everyone is staring It's not your day I guess you're feeling stupid But that's OK Misread your situation Closed feedback loop Forever skewed your choices In one fell swoop Sold another lie (Better be startin' nuthin' only result in thumpin') All opposed say "Aye" (Tryin' to stand outside it continental divide) We're nearing the end of July (Revenge is in the freezer Time is here, now seize it) Gonna have to let your guard down Find yourself another boom town and fly A little bitter Garden, Sliver, Applebite Time to face facts The ones you treasure They don't like The spotlight shines upon you Best not screw up Drink down some liquid courage From a Dixie cup They might have never noticed This latest flub But for your nervous breakdown Ah, there's the rub Sold another lie (Chicken Heart is comin' Time to spread the Jell-O) All opposed say "Aye" (This machine is worthless "Pause" button's required) We're nearing the end of July (Mother must never know 'bout KISS cards in the mattress) Gonna have to let your guard down Find yourself another boom town and fly

We are proud The Northwest People We invented microbrews We wear SPF 3 Million We all drive our Subarus We like singing in the rain We like hugging our tall trees We're too smart for our own good Each of us holds four degrees We are pale Our skin translucent We know that the sky is gray 'Least that's what we thought before The heavens burned for several days Save us, Save us Won't somebody save us from the big ball of fire in the sky? We're all building bonfires And researching ancient lore There's talk of sacrifices And drastic means obscure It burns It burns us The big ball of fire in the sky

Another gorgeous day And I'm stuck inside, working on a deadline I'm shakin' out my brain for what's left in it Gotta post something new in just a minute It's getting pretty meta When I'm singin' 'bout what I'm doing right now, baby Meta, baby My heart is simply begging to be staked 'Cause of the promise I can't let myself break Tryin' to remember a day without the pressure of This promise I won't let myself break It's been a long year, barely half over Feel like I been run down by a bulldozer Sometimes I think about throwing in the towel And then I get to my desk and sit my ass down My heart is simply begging to be staked 'Cause of the promise I can't let myself break I'm black n' blue 'cause of the monkey I can't shake I made a promise I won't let myself break This is what happens when you follow your reptile brain I admit I might have made a big mistake I made this promise I won't let myself break Not a sound, not a sound [Song within a song:] Up in the parapets, earthworms run They scatter from magical sources of light You went and got yourself lost, my son Careful, you'll end up in the witch's oven Wearing a red cloak is a dead giveaway Make sure your Grandma has no canine features You'll go down easy as an appetizer You better hope someone with axe skills shows up

You know I love you, baby There's no one for me but you You got a reputation Of disinterest in being true You say one thing But you really mean another Today you're with me But tomorrow schtup my brother Too much time these days I don't know why you hurt me It's not my style to make demands If you don't stop cattin' 'round, girl I'm gonna make like the Son of Sam You're the only one That I want for my lover I'll be your Mel Gibson Won't cha be my Danny Glover Too much time these days You've wounded all my pride, girl And I can't let that slide I'll show you my dark side, girl And you'll end up buried under somebody's double-wide Too much time these days

I'm bored with all that now It doesn't matter to me no more I know you love that guy you met All those many years ago I'm bored with that guy now I haven't got any more raw flesh And the luster's gone from my life I'm bored with all that now Dancing on the edge of overwhelm Is wearin' me down I'm bored with who I am now I'm bored with who I am The pressure built inside my head Has got to get out somehow I'm bored with wondering how

about

"5240" is not an album, per se. It is an experiment I'm conducting this year - writing, recording, and releasing a new song every week for the entirety of 2009. If I'm successful, that means I'll have made 52 new songs in one year. I don't think I've ever finished ten songs in one year before.

With the completion of this third "volume", the project is entering the home stretch.

I wouldn't read too much into these "volumes", as the songs are simply compiled in the order they were released over the last three months. In most cases, there was no "grand plan" or anything, I literally was writing the song only days before it posted, with no thought to any sort of "album flow." I'm grouping the songs in this way to make it easier for people who are interested, but maybe late to the project, to be able to download the year's output thus far in larger blobs. There will be a fourth and final "volume" at the end of 2009.

This volume is called "Summer" mostly because it was summer time while I worked on these tunes.

As with "Volume II", all of the songs here are "solo" songs, recorded by me, mostly by myself, in my apartment. A couple of tracks have guest performers.

I think with this group of songs, you can hear me getting a bit bored with writing standard "rock band"-style tunes, and wanting to experiment with pieces of music that are quite a bit less structured, and frankly, a lot more weird. This is definitely the most "peculiar" of the three volumes so far.

I hope you can find some songs you like in here, and I'd love to see you come by Monday mornings to www.shawnfarley.com as each new song is "released." 39 down, 13 more to come (I hope). Thanks for listening.
